MONTEREY PARK, Calif. — Nine people were killed in a mass shooting in a town east of Los Angeles late Saturday after a New Year's celebration that drew thousands, police said.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Bob Boss said earlier Sunday that the shooting occurred at a store on Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park. The shooter was a man, Bosch said.
Earlier in the day, thousands of people attended the annual festival.

 Choi was also told that a shooter with a machine gun had several rounds so he could reload. Choi said he believed the shooting took place at a dance club.


The newspaper reported that the shooting happened just after 10 p.m.


Saturday marks the start of the two-day festival, one of the largest Lunar New Year events in Southern California.
